In 1830, Catherine Labouré, a novice of the Sisters of Mercy, saw the Virgin Mary in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Paris.

In the vision, the Virgin Mary stood on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands.

The Virgin Mary told Labouré to have a medal struck with the inscription "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee".

The medal was struck in 1832. .
